Cultural aspects of the housing estate entrance zones

An analysis of distinctive areas in the urban structure, symbolizing border space, called entrance zones, is presented. Their information contents, often additional, contribute to the identification of the inhabitants with their residential environment. The important role of immaterial contents of the entrance zones and their influence on the identification of the inhabitants has been emphasized. The negative influence of urban areas saturated with symbolic contents, especially abstract ones, which may lead to spatial chaos and increase of confusion has been pointed out. This is prevented through obeying spatial hierarchy laws, also while designing the entrance zones. Factors influencing the importance of the entrance zones have been presented (such as: form, representation, identification, localization in urban space, use frequency). It has been shown, that the entrance zone may strengthen orientation in the urban structure and improve its legibility.
