Cohesion and diversity as paradigms of aesthetics of European gardens
Aesthetic principles which influenced the formation of gardens in Europe succumbed to constant changes, passing through stages of evolution or revolution. The development of gardens always took place parallel with to the advancement of aesthetic and philosophic thought, being a distinct reflection of opinions and preferences dominating.
In the considerations presented, employing examples from the history of European gardens, the meaning and various ways of realizing the paradigm of cohesion and diversity in the art of gardening have been displayed. The effects which may be achieved through the fulfilment of only one of these paradigms are incomparably smaller than then when cohesion and diversity co-exists, giving, on the basis of synergy, a new and much richer value.
